Project Overview

Citizen Trust MPCS is a cooperative financial platform that gives members access to savings, loans, investments, bill payments and more, all in one mobile app. Think of it as a bank app but for a member-owned cooperative society.

What is Citizen Trust MPCS?

Citizen Trust is a Multipurpose Cooperative Society. It is not a traditional bank but a member-owned financial institution. This mobile app gives members access to their accounts, savings plans, loan applications, investments and utility bill payments, all wrapped up in a clean and modern interface.

The Opportunity

Most cooperative societies in Nigeria still run on manual, paper-based processes or outdated software. This was a chance to completely change how members interact with their cooperative by giving them a proper mobile app where they can do everything on their phone, anytime they want.

My Role

I was the only Product Designer on this project. I handled everything from user research and information architecture to wireframes, high-fidelity UI design in Figma, prototyping and building out a full design system that covers both light and dark modes across 100+ screens.

Design Goals

These were the things I kept in mind throughout the entire design process.

🏦

Build Trust Through Design

People are putting their money here. The app had to feel as safe and professional as a proper bank. Clean hierarchy, clear labels and a design that never looks cheap or confusing.

🤝

Design for Members, Not Just Users

In a cooperative, people are not just customers. They are co-owners. So the experience needed to reflect that. Membership status needed to be visible, and member-specific features had to be front and center.

📱

Keep It Simple Despite the Complexity

This app has over 10 feature areas and 100+ screens. The goal was to make sure none of that complexity ever showed on the user's face. Everything needed to feel easy to find and easy to use.

🔒

Security That Does Not Frustrate

PIN entry, OTP verification, face verification, tier upgrades. All of these security steps needed to feel safe and thorough without making members feel like they are being punished for trying to use the app.

🌓

Light and Dark Mode

I designed the full app in both light and dark mode so members can use it comfortably at any time of day. Same branding, same readability, just a different feel depending on your preference.

Design Every State, Not Just the Happy Path

Every screen was designed for empty states, error states, success states and loading states. The app needed to communicate clearly no matter what was happening behind the scenes.

Design Process

I followed a structured design process from understanding the problem to delivering a high-fidelity prototype.

Design Process

The Challenge

Designing a cooperative banking app is not the same as designing a regular bank app. There were specific obstacles that came with this project:

  • Some members are not used to digital banking at all so the learning curve had to be very gentle
  • Cooperative-specific features like membership forms and member tiers do not exist in standard banking UI patterns so I had to figure those out from scratch
  • Complex flows like KYC, loan applications and safelock creation needed to feel guided and not overwhelming
  • Multiple account states like PND, restricted, active and pending all needed to look clearly different from each other
  • Designing over 100 screens consistently across light and dark modes as a single designer in two months

The Solution

Here is how I approached it:

  • Built a solid design system first with reusable components, color tokens and typography scales so I could work fast without losing consistency
  • Created custom UI patterns specifically for cooperative features like the membership form flow, tier upgrade journey and member status banners
  • Designed every complex flow as a step-by-step wizard with clear progress indicators and helpful text at each stage
  • Used distinct color coding and banners for all account states so members can always tell at a glance what their account status is
  • Designed every empty state, error state and loading state so nothing was left to guesswork
  • Delivered fully interactive Figma prototypes in both light and dark modes

User Personas

These are the two main types of members I designed for.

👩‍💼

Janet Adaeze

Small Business Owner and Cooperative Member
38 years old • Trader • Enugu

Motivations

  • Wants to get a business loan to expand her trading stock
  • Needs somewhere safe to keep her profits separate from her main account
  • Trusts the cooperative community and wants to get more out of her membership
  • Wants her money to grow through fixed deposit investments

Behaviors

  • Mainly uses her phone for WhatsApp and mobile banking
  • Likes things simple and familiar with no unnecessary steps
  • Sends money and pays bills on her phone regularly
  • Checks her savings balance often just to stay motivated

Pain Points

  • Used to have to physically visit the cooperative office for everything
  • Loan approvals always took too long with no updates along the way
  • Had no way to track her savings growth or see her loan repayment schedule
  • Complex financial apps make her feel confused and put off
"I want to grow my business with the cooperative's support, but I need to be able to see everything clearly on my phone. Where my money is, what I owe, what I am earning."
👨‍💻

Emeka Chukwu

Salaried Professional and First-Time Member
31 years old • Civil Servant • Abuja

Motivations

  • Joined the cooperative through his employer's scheme
  • Wants to use target savings to save up for a house
  • Thinking about taking a cooperative loan for a car and wants to compare his options
  • Likes the discipline that comes with automated savings like Spend and Save and Auto Save

Behaviors

  • Tech-savvy and uses several finance apps every day
  • Compares features and has high expectations for how an app should work
  • Prefers to sort things out himself rather than call support
  • Goes through his transaction history and statements regularly

Pain Points

  • The membership registration process was confusing and involved too much paperwork
  • Wants to be notified immediately after every transaction
  • Gets frustrated when apps do not explain what account tiers actually mean
  • Wants to see a full loan repayment schedule before he commits to anything
"If the app looks and works like a proper bank, I will use it. If it feels outdated or I cannot find what I need in two taps, I will just go back to my regular bank app."

Empathy Mapping

Getting into the mindset of a cooperative member trying to manage their finances on a phone.

👩‍💼

💬 Says

  • "How do I apply for a loan from here?"
  • "Is my money safe with the cooperative?"
  • "I just want to check my balance quickly"
  • "The old system was too slow and manual"
  • "I need a receipt for this transaction"

💭 Thinks

  • I hope the app doesn't lose my money
  • Is my membership still active?
  • How long will the loan approval take?
  • I should lock some money away to stop spending
  • Will I understand all these options?

🏃 Does

  • Checks balance before and after every transaction
  • Screenshots receipts for record-keeping
  • Calls customer service when unsure
  • Uses SafeLock to resist spending temptation
  • Pays DSTV and electricity through the app

❤️ Feels

  • Reassured when she sees her savings growing
  • Anxious during multi-step verification processes
  • Proud of her membership and cooperative identity
  • Frustrated by unclear error messages
  • Confident when the UI is clean and familiar

User Flow

How a member moves through the app from the moment they open it to completing any task.

User Flow Citizen Trust MPCS

How the App Flows:

1. Onboarding: Splash screen, onboarding slides, then Sign Up or Login
2. Membership: New users complete a 3-step membership form before accessing loans and investments
3. Home: Dashboard with balance card, quick actions, recent transactions and a promotional banner
4. Transfers: Send to Citizen Trust accounts or any Nigerian bank, with beneficiary management and PIN confirmation
5. Savings: Five savings options — Smart Save, SafeLock, Target Savings, AI Target Savings and Spend and Save
6. Loans: Personal or Business loan applications with amount selection, preview and PIN confirmation
7. Investments: Fixed Deposit creation where members pick a duration and see their interest preview
8. Payments: Airtime, Data, Electricity and TV payments with saved beneficiaries and shareable receipts
9. Profile and Tier Upgrade: Members can view account limits and upgrade through KYC flows including face verification

Design System

A visual language built around trust and clarity. Everything needed to be consistent across 100+ screens so I set up the design system before touching a single feature screen.

Colors

A deep navy and purple palette that feels trustworthy and modern with clear colors for different financial states.

Typography

A clean Martel Sans font that makes financial figures easy to read and scan on a mobile screen.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Regular 400
Semi-Bold 600

All currency amounts use the Bold weight so they stand out at a glance. The Naira symbol (₦) is always shown next to figures. For error and success messages I used color rather than changing the font weight so the number hierarchy stays clean.

Key Features Designed

Some of the most interesting and complex flows from across the full design.

Membership Form Flow

One of the things that makes a cooperative app different from a regular bank app is the membership form. Before you can access loans or investments you have to officially become a member. I designed this as a 3-step process covering personal information, verification documents and a review and sign step. Each step has its own progress indicator, document upload instructions with example images and separate screens for pending and approved membership status.

Membership Form Flow

Savings Ecosystem

There are five different savings products in this app and each one works differently. Smart Save automates savings. SafeLock locks money away for set periods. Target Savings helps members save toward a specific goal. AI Target Savings uses AI to suggest how aggressively you should save. And Spend and Save automatically puts aside a percentage of whatever you spend. Each product has its own complete flow including settings, previews and withdrawal screens.

Savings Ecosystem

Loan Application and Repayment

I designed two loan flows — personal and business loans. The personal loan flow walks members through selecting how much they need, entering their monthly income, choosing a repayment duration and seeing a live calculation of their estimated monthly repayment. Before submitting they see a full loan summary with an authorization statement. Once a loan is active they can view the full repayment schedule showing which installments have been paid and which are still due.

Loans Flow

Tier Upgrade and KYC

Account tiers control how much a member can transact and what features they can access. Tier 2 requires phone number verification and a residential address. Tier 3 goes further with face verification that includes liveness detection. I designed every single state in these flows including error messages, timeout screens, failed verification screens and recovery paths so members are never left confused about what went wrong or what to do next.

Tier Upgrade KYC Flow

Transfers and Payments

Members can send money to other Citizen Trust accounts or to any Nigerian bank. Both flows include a beneficiary system where members can save contacts with nicknames. Bill payments cover Airtime, Data, Electricity and TV subscriptions. Every single payment flow ends with a branded shareable receipt and both a success and failure state.

What I Learned

Citizen Trust MPCS was one of the most complex projects I have worked on and honestly one of the most rewarding. The thing that made it different from most design projects was the weight of it. People were putting real money in this app and trusting it to work. That meant every error message, every confirmation screen and every empty state actually mattered. I could not just skip those and call it done.

The membership form was one of the parts I was most proud of. Breaking it into three steps, adding photo examples for document uploads and showing a clear pending screen after submission all helped make it feel more like a welcome process than a bureaucratic hurdle.

Working alone on 100+ screens also taught me a lot about how important it is to set up your design system before you start building features. The times I had to go back and update something across 20 screens because I had not made it a component first reminded me of that lesson very clearly.
